Organic Rock, the debut LP from project-band Poke A Brain, is an eclectic and fascinating look into the mind of a mastermind by blending a myriad of styles. Organic Rock seems to effortlessly sway from influence to influence, touching on indie rock, garage rock, and a tinge of hair metal for good measure, all in excellent form. The album opener, “Bittersweet”, speaks of an unrequited love asking the listener whether the singer did “[his] best to make you feel OK? …Will you ever give your end…?” This slow-burning tune will leave you curious, as the downtrodden lyrics are accompanied by tasteful guitar squeals you’d expect to find on much heavier releases. The attention to subtle details are a fair allusion of what’s to come. The second track, “Cataclysm” shatters any expectations of any predictability by opening with monster guitar riffs and heavy drums that would make Dee Snider blush. “Gonna Live” opens with a raunchous intro that almost seems klezmer-esque at times, followed by the overall theme of PAB’s brave approach to songwriting, “Well I don’t know what you’ve been told but music is fine”. With excellent drums fills and a passionate vocal performance, this track is reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine’s classic Loveless LP at times. “Love Is Free”, in my humble opinion, has one of the catchiest choruses to be found on Organic Rock. This future garage-rock classic makes you want to crank the stereo up and roll the windows down on a nice summer day. “No Way Out” blends a huge thumping kick drum that’ll knock your head off combined with heavy guitars that undoubtedly were audible from several blocks away when originally emanating from the studio. “Politics” asks the listener to introspectively ponder, “Oh freedom…what have you done?”, followed by a melodic and fast-fingered guitar solo that brings to mind the tone and energy of legendary Ozzy Osbourne guitarist, the late Randy Rhoads. The atmospheric intro of “Resentment” quickly drops away to show the grunge-tinged sound of an artist who clearly has been burned by festering feelings hid away for too long. This same sound is apparent on “Riding West” with its overblown drum sound and deep pocket grooves that’ll have your head bobbing (you might even be so inclined to throw up some DIO devil horns toward the end of the track). The epic string intro of “Used Times” harkens back to mind the use of strings as an accompanist to heavy tracks, expertly intertwined with vocals a la Alice in Chains’ hit single “I Fade Away”. The bridge of the track is kicked off by what I can only describe as the sound of what I would imagine an alien dragon vomiting might sound like (this is a compliment, and I have no idea how PAB even remotely came up with this head and stomach turning sound). The album closer, “Wicked Games”, offers the listener a chance to reasonably look back and assess the eclecticism and DIY aesthetic of this seminal release from Poke A Brain. As far as a debut album can go, there is a LOT of ground covered here. PAB's prolific has no shortage of musical tricks up his sleeve and is clearly inspired from all forms and genres of music. Pigeon-holing Organic Rock neatly into one or two genres proves difficult and in return the listener is treated to an experience that is bound to entertain folks from all sorts of backgrounds and musical tastes. Organic Rock is available for streaming now on all major platforms and from Poke A Brain’s Bandcamp page.
